Is your car on the list for the massive Takata airbag recall? | Libertyville, IL

Important safety notice for Auto Lab customers

Please do not delay taking your vehicle in for this recall! The recalls are widespread and there are a limited number of replacement parts.

Q: Why are vehicles with airbags made by Takata being recalled?

A: To date, 7.8 million cars are being recalled because their airbags could explode with too much force when they inflate. In the faulty airbags, the metal airbag inflater can burn more aggressively than it should, causing the inflater to burst and sending pieces of metal flying through the airbag fabric. This could potentially maim or kill the car’s occupant.

Q: How big of a risk is the defect?

A: These defective airbags pose a high safety risk to you and your passengers. There have been at least two fatalities and 30 injuries linked to the defective airbags, according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says owners need to act “with urgency” to schedule the free repairs.

Q: Is my car one of the recalled models?

A: The list of nearly 8 million vehicles includes more than 50 models from BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota that were manufactured from 2000 to 2011. If your vehicle is part of the recall, you should have received a recall notification in the mail. But we urge you to check the up-to-date list here because it has been updated several times.

Q: What should I do if my car is on the list?

A: NHTSA urges you to immediately call a dealer for your vehicle make and schedule a repair appointment. Some of the individual makers now advise not allowing a front-seat passenger until the repair is done.

Owners can also contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Call volume may be high at times, so you may experience some delay.
